曾经有一位歪果仁很疑惑:为什么每次去看医生,医生总是说他上火。

这个解释对于中国人来说是再平常不过,可是换做是外国人,他们则是听得一头雾水。

相信曾经尝试过跟外国人解释“热气,上火”的概念的童鞋都会发现一个问题:不论怎么解释,甚至你扯出了阴阳等相关中医方面的知识,他们还是不懂。

It’s always difficult to explain to our non-Chinese friends because there doesn’t seem to be an official term for it since the concept doesn’t really exist in any other cultures.

在西方国家并没有一个真正意义上准确的相应概念,因此跟歪果仁解释“热气、上火”的意义,还是挺困难的。

因此曾有一个笑话,歪果仁确认你是中国人的其中一个原因就是 You know what yeet hay is.(你知道什么是热气。)

而随着交流深入,英文中也有了一些相关的表达。

“热气”这个词较为广泛的使用是粤语音译“yeet hay”,其他的英文表达有inner fever, inner heat, internal heat; excessive internal heat;heaty; heatiness等

In Cantonese, “yeet hay” literally means “hot air(热气)”. In Mandarin the equivalent is “huo qi da” (火气大), which literary means “fire air big”.

它的用法呢,可以说某人热气,上火;也可以说是某种食物会让人热气,上火。

“Yeet hay” can be used to describe a person – “you have yeet hay” (ie. you are ill), or it can be used to describe a food – “that cheeseburger is yeet hay” (ie. that cheeseburger is yeet hay (“hot”) and it’s not good for you).

不过,如果歪果仁以前完全没有听过“yeet hay”是什么东西,那我们应该怎么解释呢?

这种时候,我们可以将这些热气食物解释为为酸性食物。

Also, as far as I can tell all traditionally “yeet hay” or “hot” foods are “acidic” – fried foods, pizza, burgers, essentially all junk food.

可是,这样好像还是不足以让外国人明白什么是“热气”...(心累中!)所以,最好的解释方法是:加上具体症状。例如:喉咙痛,口腔溃疡,粉刺,流鼻血,眼睛酸涩,疲惫。

When a Chinese person says they have “yeet hay”, what they are usually describing is the symptoms – sore throat, mouth ulcer, acne, nose bleeding, sore eyes, tiredness.

不过,热气也分程度:轻微上火就可能表现为喉咙痛,严重的上火就会有口腔溃疡或是流鼻血。

If you are only a little yeet hay, you may have a sore throat and a breakout in spots. If you are very yeet hay, then you may have mouth ulcers and nose bleeds.

那么问题来了:如果有了热气的这些症状,我们应该怎么建议我们的歪果朋友呢?

答案就是!吃一些碱性食物来下火!比如萝卜啊、豆芽啊、雪梨啊、西瓜之类的...

All “liáng” (涼) or “cooling” foods are alkaline – greens, carrots, beansprouts, pears, watermelon etc

If you have yeet hay, then according to Chinese medicine you are “too hot”, so the cure is eat or drink something to “cool down”.

还有一种最直接的方法就是!!!喝凉茶啦~~~~~

Typically, you would drink “liáng chá” (凉茶) (literary “cool teas”) which are traditional Chinese herbal teas.

Leurng chahs (literally meaning”cool teas”) such as Chrysanthemum tea.

24-flavor tea 二十四味凉茶

Gum mo cha(influenza tea)感冒茶

Green bean soup 绿豆汤

Sour plum soup 酸梅汤

当然,好的睡眠也能有助于降火。

A good night’s sleep also goes a long way in helping someone who is yeet hay.

不知你们又是怎么跟歪果仁解释“热气,上火”的呢?
